Is Your Nervous System Asking for Help?

Updated: 5 days ago

Have you ever found yourself saying, "I just can't seem to switch off"?

You finally get home after a busy day. You sit on the couch, but your mind is still racing. You go to bed feeling exhausted, yet sleep doesn't come easily. Or perhaps you wake up just as tired as when you went to bed.

Many of us think this is just part of modern life. We tell ourselves to keep going, push through and hope that a weekend away or a good night's sleep will fix it.

Sometimes it does. But sometimes your body is trying to tell you that it needs something different.

Our nervous system is constantly taking in information from the world around us. Its job is to keep us safe. Most of the time, it does this beautifully. But when we've experienced ongoing stress, difficult life events or emotional overwhelm, it can become stuck in a state of protection. The interesting thing is that this doesn't always look like panic or anxiety. It can show up in much quieter ways.

  • You might find it difficult to truly relax, even when you have the time.

  • You may feel tired all the time, yet never fully refreshed.

  • Small challenges that you would normally handle with ease suddenly feel overwhelming.

  • Your mind keeps replaying conversations or worrying about what might happen next.

  • Or perhaps your body is speaking for you through tight shoulders, headaches, digestive discomfort or a feeling that you're carrying tension everywhere you go.

None of this means there is something wrong with you. In fact, it often means your nervous system is doing exactly what it was designed to do. It's protecting you.

The problem is that sometimes the body doesn't realise the stressful situation has passed. It continues to stay alert, using energy to keep you safe, even when there is no immediate danger.

I often explain it to clients like this: imagine driving a car with one foot on the accelerator and the other on the brake. You can keep moving forward for a while, but eventually the engine starts to struggle. That is often what living with an overwhelmed nervous system feels like.

The beautiful thing is that our nervous system is incredibly adaptable. When the body experiences safety, it naturally begins to soften. Breathing becomes easier. Muscles start to let go. The mind becomes quieter. We don't have to force healing. We simply create the conditions where healing can happen.

This is one of the reasons I love Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy. The sessions are not about fixing you because I don't believe you are broken. They are about listening to your body and creating a space where your nervous system can remember what balance feels like. From there, your body does what it has always been designed to do.

Heal.

If you've recognised yourself in some of these signs, perhaps your body isn't asking you to work harder. Perhaps it's simply asking you to listen.

Sometimes healing doesn't begin with doing more. Sometimes it begins with feeling safe enough to do less.
